Summary

In this richly developed fantasy, Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most persecuted class of people in Ikhara。 She lives in a remote village with her father, where the decade-old trauma of watching her mother snatched by royal guards for an unknown fate still haunts her。 Now, the guards are back and this time it's Lei they're after -- the girl with the golden eyes whose rumored beauty has piqued the king's interest。

Over weeks of training in the opulent but oppressive palace, Lei and eight other girls learns the skills and charm that befit a king's consort。 There, she does the unthinkable -- she falls in love。 Her forbidden romance becomes enmeshed with an explosive plot that threatens her world's entire way of life。 Lei, still the wide-eyed country girl at heart, must decide how far she's willing to go for justice and revenge。

This was completely my own fault that I didn’t like this book because I didn’t read on the plot beforehand so if you don’t like demon/animal/people, don’t read this book

I did not like this book。 I felt like there was no plot and the plot that was there felt clunky and rushed。 I felt uncomfortable reading about the subject of this book (although a TW was provided) and just overall didn't enjoy reading。 The bonus was that the romance was sweet and at least made sense, but even that lacked in areas。 I did not like this book。 I felt like there was no plot and the plot that was there felt clunky and rushed。 I felt uncomfortable reading about the subject of this book (although a TW was provided) and just overall didn't enjoy reading。 The bonus was that the romance was sweet and at least made sense, but even that lacked in areas。 。。。more

ok SO。 the main character is annoying at times, and not too developped to be honest ? so she pissed me off at times BUTtw // sexual assaulti had never read a book that depicted sexual assault the way it did。 It just。 I found so much strength in this depiction to be honest and yeah。 It just。 it's not that it felt refreshing but it felt needed and sos im grateful for that。 ok SO。 the main character is annoying at times, and not too developped to be honest ? so she pissed me off at times BUTtw // sexual assaulti had never read a book that depicted sexual assault the way it did。 It just。 I found so much strength in this depiction to be honest and yeah。 It just。 it's not that it felt refreshing but it felt needed and sos im grateful for that。 。。。more

This one didn’t really knock my socks off but I enjoyed it。 There was a LOT of sexual violence which I didn’t like, and probably had a big impact on my enjoyment of the book, (and it’s literally one of the main plot drivers so。 No escaping that lol。)It was very Hunger Games-y。 I’ve been wanting to read more fantasy novels that are set outside of Anglo-centrism and this was definitely beautifully descriptive of the setting, costumes, etc。, which I really enjoyed。 The romance between the two girls This one didn’t really knock my socks off but I enjoyed it。 There was a LOT of sexual violence which I didn’t like, and probably had a big impact on my enjoyment of the book, (and it’s literally one of the main plot drivers so。 No escaping that lol。)It was very Hunger Games-y。 I’ve been wanting to read more fantasy novels that are set outside of Anglo-centrism and this was definitely beautifully descriptive of the setting, costumes, etc。, which I really enjoyed。 The romance between the two girls was nice, tho definitely not the main point of the book, so if that’s what you are looking for (like I, foolishly, was) not the book for you。 。。。more

I'm in awe of this book and the strength it transpires。It approaches heavy topics such as rape in a way that makes the reader feel the fear and desperation of the characters。 It gives those same characters power and strength and understanding that they are so much more than what happened and what they are forced to be a part of。The story is so visually breathtaking, all the characters are beyond interesting, the detail in the writing makes picturing all the places and animal shapes so easy that I'm in awe of this book and the strength it transpires。It approaches heavy topics such as rape in a way that makes the reader feel the fear and desperation of the characters。 It gives those same characters power and strength and understanding that they are so much more than what happened and what they are forced to be a part of。The story is so visually breathtaking, all the characters are beyond interesting, the detail in the writing makes picturing all the places and animal shapes so easy that losing yourself in the story is unavoidable。The writing flows effortlessly and there's always something happening。I'm truly surprised with how great this book is, I wasn't sure what to expect but I'm glad I picked it up。 。。。more

TW - Rape, abduction, abuse(sexual/emotional/physical), assault, death, genocide, slavery, murder, violence。 I really enjoyed this book。 It gave me Memoirs of a Geisha with Rebels of the Sands (book 2) vibes and I was living for it。 I really loved the character development in this book and thought it was done very well for a lot of the characters but especially our main girl Lei。 I also have to say I loved the LGBTQ+ rep in a fantasy book as I’ve not read many that have that at the forefront and TW - Rape, abduction, abuse(sexual/emotional/physical), assault, death, genocide, slavery, murder, violence。 I really enjoyed this book。 It gave me Memoirs of a Geisha with Rebels of the Sands (book 2) vibes and I was living for it。 I really loved the character development in this book and thought it was done very well for a lot of the characters but especially our main girl Lei。 I also have to say I loved the LGBTQ+ rep in a fantasy book as I’ve not read many that have that at the forefront and I really enjoyed it。 I did think at points it was a little repetitive in parts and some of it was a bit predictable and that’s the reason for the 4 stars but it didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the book。 And that ending! I enjoyed my time reading Girls of Paper and Fire and found it difficult to put the book down but in retrospect, I don't think I liked it that much。 What I liked:- the premise and some of it’s execution- half human, half demon/animal (one of my favorite tropes) - focus on female empowerment- the way it tackles oppression, misogyny and rape (trigger warning!)- QUEER REPRESENTATION!!!- the setting- unputdownable/fast readWhat I didn't like:- I couldn’t stand the main character Lei, she was so anno I enjoyed my time reading Girls of Paper and Fire and found it difficult to put the book down but in retrospect, I don't think I liked it that much。 What I liked:- the premise and some of it’s execution- half human, half demon/animal (one of my favorite tropes) - focus on female empowerment- the way it tackles oppression, misogyny and rape (trigger warning!)- QUEER REPRESENTATION!!!- the setting- unputdownable/fast readWhat I didn't like:- I couldn’t stand the main character Lei, she was so annoying! She acted and behaved like a child but thought of herself as a badass, which she -believe me - was not。 - instalove- formulaic plot and cast (ordinary girl made special, best friend, lover, mean girl, mean girl's best friend, …) which made it very predictable- lack of worldbuilding and underdeveloped characters - a lot of telling 。。。more

Amazing, incredible, brilliant, I loved it more than life itself。 Lei and Wren are my otp right now and their relationship is so incredible and meaningful。 I have no words to describe how much I loved this book! But I do warn any future readers to be sure that they are ready for the heavy subjects of the book such as sexual assault, abuse, racism, genocide and other things。

Wow--this was an extraordinarily powerful read。 Natasha Ngan's 'Girls of Paper and Fire' somehow managed to address the issues of rape-culture, violence against women, classism, LGBTQIA+ rights and gender equality, all within the span of just 380 pages。Natasha Ngan also shines a light on the history of forced prostitution/concubinage in ancient societies, revealing the frightening and devastating reality that this held for so many millions of women throughout history。Going into the book with no Wow--this was an extraordinarily powerful read。 Natasha Ngan's 'Girls of Paper and Fire' somehow managed to address the issues of rape-culture, violence against women, classism, LGBTQIA+ rights and gender equality, all within the span of just 380 pages。Natasha Ngan also shines a light on the history of forced prostitution/concubinage in ancient societies, revealing the frightening and devastating reality that this held for so many millions of women throughout history。Going into the book with no premonitions as to its content, I was shocked by how much this story moved me; I am among those people who have been lucky enough to have had no experience of sexual harassment and the like, so for me, this book was painfully but vitally eye-opening。 While being extremely difficult to read in parts, I strongly recommend this book to all women (sixteen or older, owing to the story's confronting nature), as its message needs to be spread as far as the reach of sexual abuse and violence is received。 。。。more

I am really happy that there was a warning for the violence and SA that takes place in the book before actually starting it。 This book was intense and I felt my heartbreaking at times because I could just feel the pain Lei felt and I so badly wanted her to escape that place。 I couldn’t help but squeal in delight when she and Wren admitted their feelings for another。 Reading this, one could not help but get angry by the way the Paper Girls were being treated and the society they live in in genera I am really happy that there was a warning for the violence and SA that takes place in the book before actually starting it。 This book was intense and I felt my heartbreaking at times because I could just feel the pain Lei felt and I so badly wanted her to escape that place。 I couldn’t help but squeal in delight when she and Wren admitted their feelings for another。 Reading this, one could not help but get angry by the way the Paper Girls were being treated and the society they live in in general。 This was beautifully written and I have already started the second book。 。。。more

I really wanted to enjoy this but I just。。。 I couldn’t get into it。 I can seriously appreciate the author though for writing a piece on oppression and “women’s duties” but like idk it just wasn’t my thing。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I mostly liked this book, at least enough to see what happens in book two。 The abuse and rape of the Paper Girls, by the king, was disturbing, as was the taboo about the lesbian relationship between Lei and Ren (not sure of the spelling as I listened to the audiobook) and not so much in homosexual relationships。 I appreciated the women fighting back against the tyranny and I want to see if they will succeed。

It took me a bit to get through this book, and honestly, the beginning and end were the very best parts。 I didn’t care too much for the middle where she just is a paper girl, and the way she falls in love with Wren wasn’t particularly compelling to me。 The first 50 pages and last 50 pages were so intriguing and good though! And there were quite a few side characters that I enjoyed and a death that I was a bit surprised to see。
